Although Video Analytics (VA) have been around for over a decade now, mass adoption has yet to materialize. With recent interests from the market and technological advancements, it appears the technology is now ready for prime time. As video systems grow in size, it is becoming increasingly difficult to monitor or search for suspicious activity from all the cameras. A majority of existing video systems rely on security guards to first identify suspicious activities and then initiate procedures to verify and respond to critical issues. Video Motion Detection (VMD) can help by detecting changes in scenery and alert security personnel of possible suspicious activities. The challenge with VMD is that many uncontrollable elements can cause pixel changes, such as clouds, tree leaves or other debris which could lead to false alarms. In addition, busy scenes such as moving vehicles can make it more difficult to identify other activities that are critical to safety and security. |
