Three Types of Scalability to Consider: Vertical, Horizontal, and now Administrative

Scalability is a term often cited in RFPs or VMS sales presentations, but what does it really mean? There are two primary methods of scaling applications – vertically and horizontally – and choosing the right scalability for your deployment depends on how you want to scale and how much you want to spend.

Scaling vertically (or scale up) involves adding resources within the same logical unit to increase capacity. Increasing server CPU or expanding NAS/SAN storage can increase overall capacity for existing systems.

Scaling horizontally (or scale out) involves adding more nodes to a system and making the nodes work together as a single unit. In large centralized VMS deployments, common in airports, multiple servers are "clustered" to distribute the workload required to manage thousands of cameras.

New technologies such as 4K resolution cameras dramatically increase the amount of data to manage. Open, scalable systems should be able to accommodate that growth with only incremental (not forklift) upgrades.

However, large numbers of cameras, servers, and storage means increased management complexity and a need for administrative scalability, especially in multi-site deployments.

Until now, the administration of geographically distributed components with little visibility is both time consuming and risky for organizations to manage properly. With the launch of Aimetis Enterprise Manager, the administrative burden is dramatically reduced. Watch this 90 second video to learn how Enterprise Manager helps lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) and boost administrative scalability for your next deployment.

Sincerely,

Justin Schorn
