University of Akron Continues Expansion of Aimetis Symphony across Campus
"Best in the Midwest" Continues to Convert Cameras from Analog to IP
Waterloo, Canada - 2011-08-31
Aimetis Corp., a global leader in intelligent IP video management software, today announced that The University of Akron (UA), the fourth largest university in Ohio, is continuing its expansion of Aimetis Symphony™ video surveillance to an additional 600 cameras across their metropolitan Ohio campus within the next year.
The University of Akron is a vibrant urban campus located in the heart of downtown Akron. With over 29,000 students, and more than 80 buildings on a total of 218 acres of property, the campus contains a variety of structures, including classrooms, residence halls, a student union and recreation center and various athletic fields. The campus boasts a two-year-old, $61 million football stadium, and even newer soccer stadium, home to the Akron Zips soccer teams. The Zips’ men’s soccer team are the defending 2010 NCAA Division I national champions. Watching over the campus is The University of Akron Police Department (UAPD), which maintains a staff of 40 sworn officers and a dedicated dispatch center that monitors phone, radio traffic and remote video feeds.
Since April 2010, UA has implemented installation of more than 150 digital cameras from companies such as Axis, and have monitored and recorded its data streams with Aimetis Symphony. Backed by a 50 terabyte SAN and two servers, Aimetis Symphony provides a robust and user friendly interface for monitoring and video control. Over the course of the next year, the university plans to add additional servers and install 600 additional camera streams on Aimetis Symphony as they convert existing analog camera feeds to digital format.
"The decision to use Aimetis Symphony video management was based on several critical factors. After extensive research and an initial 100 camera pilot program, Aimetis emerged as the clear choice for The University of Akron," said Cpl. Robert Stachowiak, departmental systems administrator for the UAPD. "Aimetis software stood out from the rest in terms of economics, ease-of-use and camera to server ratios needed to support over 1,000 cameras. The simple licensing model along with dynamic licensing and integrated analytics, made it easy for us to accurately budget the resources needed to support our future growth."
In addition to using Aimetis Symphony for motion tracking, UA has been utilizing Symphony’s Intelligent Search feature, allowing police personnel to pinpoint specific events in seconds by setting search parameters such as time, location and activity. This feature eliminates the need to review hours, days or months of video footage, which requires significant resources.
